I recommend getting one of these books when you first begin homeschooling and use it as a reference throughout your homeschool journey. Regardless of how long you homeschool, you will always have doubts and questions about how your child is performing.A scope and sequence book can put your mind at ease. Once you have a scope and sequence book, make a list of each area in math that he needs to work on for the school year. For example for grades three and four, by the end of the year in subtraction, your child should be able to: solve vertical and horizontal computation problems, review subtraction of 2 numbers whose sums would be 18 or less, subtract 1- or 2-digit number from a 2-digit number with/without renaming, subtract 1-, 2-, or 3-digit numbers from 3- and 4-digit number with/without renaming, subtract 1-, 2-, 3-, 4-, or 5-digit number from a 5-digit number.
Most volumes begin with an explanation of basic arithmetic operations namely: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Reference tables are supplied to provide clues for quick mental arithmetic and mastery of math facts. When ready to be tested, the student can select a drill, which has 10 questions and are selected from a database of number pairs for calculation. The Basic Level volumes use simple single digit numbers and the interactive math software at the Advanced Level uses mostly double digit numbers for math practice problems. Each drill is then scored and timed with the results saved. With the test records, students can follow their own progress and adults who may be supervising can monitor progress and assess if there are any learning issues that require intervention.
To get your child ready to tackle 3rd grade math with confidence, it is time to introduce learning aids at home. Most parents assume that worksheets, word problems and visual representations are the most helpful tools, but many forget the importance of online tools that offer educational value. If you choose the right programs, you can help pave the way for success for your child by incorporating fun, challenging games that promote the learning and understanding of 3rd grade math. Many online math games are designed purely for entertainment and will not do much in terms of teaching your child. While these games can be fun and engaging for third graders, you want to choose games that will practice the skills being taught in school. Look for games and puzzles that are part of an adaptive learning program. This means that the online games are well-thought out and match the same set of skills that are being taught in the third grade curriculum. The program is structured toward each individual student and fills in the gaps where the child is struggling.
